What is bandwidth theft?
Bandwidth theft is difficult to explain but is done by many
webmasters everyday.
Think of bandwidth like cellular phone minutes. You buy a
plan that allows 300 minutes a month. If you set your phone
down on your desk and someone uses it without your permission they
are stealing from you. They might argue that you still have
your phone so they did not steal anything.
If a person finds that I have a large collection of downloadable
graphics or sound effects he/she can link to my site from his/hers.
By doing this the information is downloaded from my site instead of
his/hers. Since he/she is using the files on my web server
he/she does not use their disk space or bandwidth saving him/her
money. |
